A little history to set the stage:
Nashville was founded on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1779, back when it was a frontier stockade called Fort Nashborough. It grew into the capital of Tennessee and earned the nickname the Athens of the South for its schools, its architecture, and the full scale Parthenon that still stands in Centennial Park.
But the stories we love most are the ones that do not always make the brochure. In December 1864, the Battle of Nashville helped bring the Civil War toward its end right here in the city. In August 1920, Tennessee became the deciding state to ratify the 19th Amendment, giving women across America the right to vote, and it came down to a single lawmaker changing his vote after a letter from his mother. In 1960, Nashville's lunch counter sit-ins made this city a training ground for the Civil Rights Movement and the leaders who carried it forward.
