A little history to set the stage:
Long before it was a city, this was Cherokee land and a vital river crossing known as Ross's Landing. That heritage carries a heavy chapter too, because Chattanooga was one of the departure points for the Trail of Tears in the 1830s, and that history deserves to be told honestly.
During the Civil War, Chattanooga was called the gateway to the Deep South, and both sides knew that whoever held the city held the railroads. In 1863, the battles for Chattanooga, including the fighting on Lookout Mountain that people still call the Battle Above the Clouds, opened the door for the Union march that followed. Later the city reinvented itself around the railroad, and the Chattanooga Choo Choo turned a train line into an American legend.
